2♥ : 3♣
3♠ : 3NT
Basic System is Standard American.
I would like to know the correct bidding to describe the length of the two major suits to my partner.
Hi Barbara,
The best bidding description of the hand would be to open 1♠, and if partner responds 2♣, make a jump rebid to 3♥ to emphasise a 5-5 shape. If partner supports the hearts, that’s good, we’ll play in hearts, but say partner rebids 3NT (no fit for either major). I still wouldn’t want to play in 3NT, so I will then make another rebid of 4♠ and this should show a 6/5 (or 7/5) shape.
