(1) Should West bid 5♠ over 5♣?
(2) Should East double 6♣?
Hi Deana,
There are some interesting points on this hand.
– I prefer making a Michaels Cuebid with the North’s hand; especially when the opponents have opened 1♠ and holding a void, I expect the auction to get quite competitive and thus I would want to show the 5-5+ nature of my hand straight away.
– Over South’s 5♣, perhaps West can help the high level auction by bidding 5♦, but otherwise the highly distributional nature of the hand definitely warrants a 5♠ bid.
– South did very well to bid 6♣.
– East definitely should not double 6♣ – as West couldn’t double 6♣, that makes East’s hand less attractive to double as he doesn’t have any defensive tricks. It will likely also tell the position of the CK if NS have an 11-card fit and clubs are 1-1.
Kind regards,
Andy
